How to Choose the Right Size for Your Wall Art

Choosing art shouldn’t feel like guessing.
This guide helps first-time buyers choose the right size with confidence.

Step 1: Start With Your Space

Different rooms need different proportions.
Before thinking about inches or centimeters, identify where the artwork will live.

  • Living Room (above sofa)

  • Bedroom (above bed or side wall)

  • Entryway / Hallway

  • Office or shared spaces

Living Room: Above the Sofa

A good rule of thumb:
Artwork should cover about 2/3 to 3/4 of the sofa's width.

Example Table

Sofa Width Recommended Art Width
72–80 in 36–48 in
84–96 in 48–60 in

If you’re between sizes, slightly larger usually feels more intentional.

Bedroom: Calm and Balanced

Bedrooms benefit from softer scale and quieter compositions.
Vertical or medium-sized pieces often feel more restful than oversized art.

Size Guidance

  • Above a queen bed → medium horizontal or a pair

  • Side wall → vertical formats work especially well

Entryway & Hallway: Narrow Walls

In narrow or transitional spaces, height matters more than width.
Vertical artwork adds presence without overwhelming the wall.

Practical Tip

Leave breathing room above and below the piece.
Crowding makes even good art feel wrong.

Start With One. Grow Over Time.

You don’t need to fill the entire wall at once.
Many of our pieces are designed to work alone—and later pair into a balanced set.

This approach reduces risk and helps first-time buyers feel confident starting small.

Still Unsure? Choose the Safest Option

Bullet Points

  • Medium size over small

  • Softer contrast over bold

  • One strong piece over many small ones

Customer photo review of Alabaster Erosion Wabi Sabi Painting

Absolutely in love with the thick, tactile impasto on my new piece from HueMaster – it adds so much depth and character to my living room, and the custom color tweaks they made are perfection.

Customer photo review of Alabaster Erosion Wabi Sabi Painting

Totally in love with the thick, textured impasto brushwork on this piece, and it got here way sooner than I thought it would.

Customer photo review of Alabaster Erosion Wabi Sabi Painting

Total statement maker for my little reading nook - obsessed with the 3D texture and how it just ties everything in this room together!

The frame is surprisingly substantial and gives the artwork a very finished look.

I bought this for my home office and it makes the background of my video calls look so much better.

Customer service helped me decide between two sizes and their recommendation was spot on.

Simple design, but the texture makes it feel really special.

It instantly made my living room feel more finished and put together.

I was worried about ordering artwork online, but the quality exceeded my expectations.
